October 14:  The scout & guide hut is now demolished with construction of a new community centre to follow soon.

August 14:  The Parish Council application to the public works loan board has been approved. Contractors take possession of the site on 11 August 14. Works will include the demolition of the scout & guide hut and the construction of a new community centre.  The multi use games area will remain open throughout the duration of the works.

Proposed Community Centre - the project has secured planning permission and tenders have been returned. A public information evening was held on 2 June 14 with all residents present supporting the proposal for Parish Council to apply for a public works loan. The Parish Council will now hold an extra-ordinary meeting on 9 June 14 at 6.30pm at the Silkstone sports pavilion to finalise the loan application. Subject to loan approval the scheme should commence this summer with a 16 week construction programme.

December 13:

Silkstone Parish Council is proposing to apply for a public works loan to enable the construction of a new community centre (subject to approval of planning permission) at the back of the Petrol Station in Silkstone.

The new building will replace the existing Scout Hut which is no longer fit for purpose. The new centre will be home to the Silkstone Scouts, Cubs, Guides and Brownies as well
as a Dance School. The new building will have 2 large rooms rather than 1 so that two groups can use the building at the same time. This opens up the use of the building and potential new user groups have already expressed an interest in booking this new facility.

It is hoped that the new community centre will be used by all age groups in the community and benefit the whole Parish being as it is centrally located between the villages of Silkstone and Silkstone Common.

It is intended to lease the new building to a Community Centre Management Committee made up of the building’s user groups. Thereby recouping the cost of the loan repayments and so should have no effect on the precept amount paid by residents.

As at December 13 – The planning application has been submitted and a decision from the planners is awaited. If planning permission is granted the Parish Council will then seek tenders for the work. Upon the selection of a preferred contractor the Parish Council will then apply for a public works loan to cover the construction costs.
